Local News in Brief : Rent Law Change Gains

Share

The Beverly Hills City Council has taken the first step to amend its rent control ordinance to protect long-term tenants from being evicted to make room for relatives of landlords.

Under a measure approved Tuesday night, a landlord must evict the newest tenant if he is looking for an apartment unit to house a spouse, child or parent. The proposed change is expected to receive final approval on second reading June 21.

Currently, landlords can evict any tenant to make room for a relative. Critics said that long-term tenants, many of them elderly, often are the ones evicted because they pay lower rents than newer tenants.

Under the amendment, elderly or handicapped tenants could still be evicted, but only if they occupy the one apartment unit with the number of bedrooms and amenities required by the owner’s relative.
