2.6 Quake Shakes Downtown Area; No Injuries or Damage
A small earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale hit the downtown area at 10:23 a.m. today, but there were no reports of damage or injuries, officials said.
The temblor’s epicenter was about 1 mile south-southeast of downtown, said Bobb Finn, a spokesman for Caltech Seismology Laboratory in Pasadena. He said the quake was not an aftershock of any other quake.
Police and fire agencies reported feeling tremors in buildings throughout the Civic Center and surrounding areas.
“Things were definitely jumping around a little, but there were no real problems,” said Sgt. Glenn Thrall, a watch commander in the Newton Street Division just south of downtown.
