The 13-year-old girl, who was the focus of an extensive search along the rugged terrain of Batiquitos Lagoon when she disappeared while walking a neighbor’s dog four days ago was found safe at her aunt’s Oceanside home Wednesday, Carlsbad police said.

Lucy Maria Morales, who had been living with a guardian in Carlsbad, just north of the lagoon, was found at the home of Joanna Morales, said Lt. James Hawks.

Police were notified about 8 p.m. Wednesday by Patricia Hamilton, the child’s guardian, that the girl was safe.

Hawks said Lucy Morales told investigators she traveled to her aunt’s home on her own.

Until the investigation is completed, Hawks said, the girl will be staying at the Hillcrest Receiving Home. The dog, a black cocker spaniel, was found safe earlier in the week.

After the girl’s disappearance, more than 50 officers from the Police and Sheriff’s departments and the Border Patrol conducted an unsuccessful 12-hour search through the undeveloped surroundings of Batiquitos Lagoon.
