Weekend TV : KCET Offers Collection of Shows During a Weekend Pledge Festival

Fans of public television should have an enjoyable and educational weekend in front of the tube as KCET Channel 28 conducts a mini-drive for funds.

Mr. and Ms. Fix It can give their tools a rest this afternoon as Bob Vila conducts a three-hour “This Old House Marathon” beginning at 3:30 p.m. This handyman and his crew will turn a basement into a rec room, demolish a closet and provide tips on insulating a house, sheathing side walls, installing electrical wiring and constructing shelves and storage cabinets, along with discussing strategies for interior decorating.

Between tonight’s appeals for money, Katharine Hepburn reviews “The Spencer Tracy Legacy,” with film clips and comments from the actor’s friends and colleagues beginning at 9:35 p.m. At 11:40 p.m. Hepburn discusses her own career, relationships and aging process in an interview taped at her New York home.

Sunday, Channel 28 wraps up its pledge drive with such public television favorites as “Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel” at 7 p.m. and “Pavarotti Returns to Naples” at 9:35 p.m.

From 5 to 11 p.m. today, Channels 11 and 6 will be airing the rock/comedy concert taking place in London as a 70th-birthday tribute to Nelson Mandela, spiritual leader of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement. A host of stars are scheduled to entertain, including Whitney Houston, George Michael, Dire Straits, Sting, the Eurythmics and Harry Belafonte.
