Local News in Brief : San Juan Capistrano : City OKs Plan to Save Archeological Finds
- Share via
The City Council has approved a plan to preserve archeological remnants discovered at the site of two construction projects.
The plans call for keeping intact the foundation of a 200-year-old orchard wall near Mission San Juan Capistrano. Workers discovered the wall while grading property on Del Obispo Street near Ortega Highway for a Sizzler restaurant.
The council action requires the developer to modify the building so it will not disturb the artifact, which will later be made accessible to the public.
The plans also call for preserving a wall from the Valenzuela adobe at Camino Capistrano and Verdugo Street, where the the Franciscan Plaza shopping center is being built. The wall will become part of the development.
In addition, Indian artifacts and animal-butchering sites on the Franciscan development will be relocated for historical study.
