World Records Are Broken by Chistyakova and Aouita

Galina Chistyakova of the Soviet Union and Said Aouita of Morocco set world records in track and field meets Saturday.

At Leningrad, Chistyakova leaped 24 feet 8 inches in the women’s long jump to break the record of 24-5 1/2 shared by Jackie Joyner-Kersee of the United States and Heike Dreschler of East Germany.

At Casablanca, Morocco, Aouita won the men’s two-mile in 8 minutes 13.09 seconds, breaking his own record of 8:13.45 set last year.

Chistyakova’s previous best was 24-1 in 1986. The previous best by a Soviet woman was 24-3, by Yelena Belevskaya in 1987.

Another notable mark in the Leningrad meet was recorded by Alexander Markin of the Soviet Union, winner of the men’s 110-meter high hurdles in 13.20. That is the fastest time in the world this year and equaled the European record set by Stephane Caristan of France in 1986.

In Morocco, Steve Cram of Britain, who holds the world record in the mile, returned to action, winning the 1,500 meters in 3:37.43, and Calvin Smith of the United States, the former world record-holder in the 100-meter dash, won the 100 in 10.21 seconds.
