John B. (Jim) Kilroy’s 79-foot Maxi yacht, Kialoa V, made her West Coast debut by scoring four straight bullets to win its division of the Long Beach Yacht Club’s ninth Race Week. Kialoa V was the only craft in the 49-boat fleet to win four straight races.

Since building the Frers-79, Kilroy has campaigned the yacht in Europe and on the East Coast. Kilroy sailed Race Week under the banner of California Yacht Cub.

Other Maxis in the series were Jacques Dewailly’s Frers-72 Emeraude of the Yacht Club de France, Hal Day’s Farr-68 Winterhawk of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club (Newport Beach), and Lion of New Zealand, a Holland-77, skippered by Larry Spira of the Los Angeles Yacht Club.

Race Week is primarily for International Offshore Rule (IOR) rated boats. This year there were four classes of IOR and two one-design classes, J-35s and Schock-35s.

This year’s regatta was sailed in predominantly light winds that rarely exceeded 10 knots.
