The former student body president and vice president of Grossmont College were sentenced Monday to jail terms of one year and six months, respectively, for a $41,000 spending spree on a college credit card.

The former student body president, Michael Bang, 26, was sentenced to one year in jail by San Diego Municipal Judge H. Ronald Domnitz, who ordered him to pay $20,500 to the school.

The former vice president, Larry Humpal, 26, was sentenced to six months in jail with a review hearing set for Aug. 26, which could cut the term. He also was ordered to pay $20,500 to the school.

Both Bang and Humpal were remanded into custody immediately after sentencing.

Domnitz gave both former student leaders severe lectures about their failure to repay the Associated Students of Grossmont College for the $27,725 spending spree, which now totals $41,000 with interest.

Bang and Humpal signed for bills at the Beverly Hills Hotel last summer that included daily massages and hair styling, a rented cabana at the pool, clothing, a large liquor bill, rented Mercedes-Benz automobiles with car phones, and duck pate, crab and shrimp served in the rooms, which rented for $450 a day.

Bang, who has changed his name to Michael Humbert, is now a secretary in the Los Angeles area, said his attorney, Hodge Crabtree.

Crabtree unsuccessfully asked if Bang could be placed in a work-furlough program. Domnitz refused, saying Bang would not qualify because he works outside San Diego County.

Domnitz placed both Bang and Humpal on five years’ probation. He ordered them to begin paying back the college $350 a month once they leave jail and threatened Humpal with a prison sentence if he refuses to make the payments.
