Mira Mesa Senior Is State Winner in National Peace Essay Contest

A Mira Mesa High School senior is the California winner of the National Peace Essay Contest. Jocelyn Poblete will be joined by winners from the 49 other states in Washington later this week to meet with officials at the White House, in Congress and at the State Department.

Poblete submitted a 1,500-word essay in the competition sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Peace, an independent institution established by Congress to promote the peaceful resolution of international conflict. Poblete will receive a $250 college scholarship and will be eligible for a $5,000 prize given to the national essay winner to be announced during the Washington festivities.

In other school awards, Stephanie Baron, an instructor at Patrick Henry High School, was chosen outstanding California biology teacher of the year by the National Assn. of Biology Teachers. Baron is a mentor teacher in the San Diego city school district, providing biology training for other teachers.
