A possible arson fire blackened more than 700 acres of the Angeles National Forest near Pyramid Lake before firefighters contained the blaze Monday, authorities said.

The fire, which started just before 3 p.m. Sunday, was thought to have been contained Sunday night, but continued to spread through steep terrain until fire crews halted it about 4 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

Bruce Bundick, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, said firefighters hope to have the fire completely under control sometime today. The cause of the fire had not been determined, but arson was suspected, he said.

The fire started north of Hungry Valley Road, east of the Golden State Freeway, and was pushed by 20-m.p.h. winds toward Apple Canyon. There were no buildings threatened by the fire and no major injuries were reported.

Bundick said 400 firefighters from the Forest Service, Los Angeles County Fire Department, California Department of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management fought the blaze, in the northwest corner of the county.

Most of those firefighters would remain on the lines today to mop up, he said.
