Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Rowdy Parties Could Cost Host a Bundle

Rowdy partying at home in Newport Beach may soon be more expensive than going out for a night on the town.

A new ordinance given preliminary approval by the City Council Monday says that hosts of parties are subject to fines up to $500 if police have to come out to a residence.

Robert Oakley, a police spokesman, said revelers will usually be given a warning first, but after that it will be fines for manpower and equipment used to break up the festivities.

“We have an ongoing party situation here during the summer,” Oakley said. “Parties are something we’ve always had to deal with, and we use a lot of manpower.”

He said the the idea came from other cities that have successfully tried the program. The ordinance had been requested by Police Chief Arb Campbell. The ordinance will go before the council for a second reading later this month and, if approved, will take effect immediately.
