El Cajon Wrestler Butler Gets Olympic Spot

David Butler of El Cajon gained a spot on the U.S. Olympic wrestling team by posting 3-0 and 4-3 decisions over Dale Oliver of Albany, N.Y., in the finals of the Greco-Roman championships at Pensacola, Fla., Friday.

Mark Fuller of Pleasant Hill, bidding for a third Olympic team membership in the 105.5-pound Greco-Roman finals, beat T.J. Jones of San Diego in the final matches, 3-1 and 3-1.

SOCCER

The Sockers’ Fernando Clavijo and Raffaele Ruotolo will conduct week-long soccer camps in the San Diego area this summer, offering instruction for beginning, intermediate and advanced players. The first camp will be in Fallbrook from June 27 to July 1. The camps will move to different sites weekly.

CANOEING

The 21st annual Noah Kalama Regatta for outrigger canoes is scheduled for today at 8 a.m. on Mission Bay. Five divisions for men and women will be contested on an eight-lane, quarter-mile course.

OCEAN EVENTS

Paul Donohue of Thousand Oaks, the only American to be the world surf swimming champion, and Mitch Kahn of San Clemente will be the featured competitors when the Bud Light Ocean Festival makes the first stop of its third season at Torrey Pines Beach beginning at 9 a.m. today.

The Ocean Festival, a nine-stop series, consists of 10 ocean and beach competitions to be held every half hour. Among the events are a 1-mile swim, 5-kilometer beach run, 1,000-meter swim, 1,000-meter paddle board, run-swim-run event, two-man flatbottom boat (dory) race, 1,000-meter surf ski and an ironman competition.

The ironman competition consists of swimming, paddleboarding, surf skiing and dory racing. Kahn has won the ironman world championship five times.
