Argentine Film Celebration Begins

“A Celebration of the Argentine Cinema,” a week of festivities, will kick off tonight with an Academy-hosted evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

Robert Wise, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will host an invitation-only reception, preceding an 8 p.m. screening of highlights from Argentine films that is open to the public. Dr. Victor Martinez, the vice president of Argentina, and Theodore Gilfred, U.S. ambassador to Argentina, as well as leading Argentine film makers, will attend. Cost is $6 for the general public and $4 for Academy members.

On Tuesday, the Directors Guild of America will host a lunch to introduce American film makers to leading directors attending from Argentina. On Wednesday, the DGA and Women in Film are co-sponsoring an evening seminar at the Directors Guild Theatre, 7950 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, at which a panel of Argentina’s leading female film makers and actors will discuss the place of women in film.

On Thursday evening, UCLA’s film department will open a festival of Argentine films (see Special Screenings, Page 3) that will continue through July 31. Tickets are $4 and available an hour prior to showtime. For information on the UCLA film festival: (213) 206-FILM.
