The lobby of the Glendale police station was evacuated Sunday afternoon after a man placed a metal pipe bomb on the front counter, police said.

Two men, one of whom placed the bomb on the counter, were arrested after the 1 p.m. incident, Sgt. Mel Barnes said. The men, who were not identified, are in their early 20s and are brothers, he said.

One of the men walked into the station at 140 N. Isabel St. and put an 8-inch long, 3/4-inch diameter pipe wrapped in a blue plastic bag on the counter and told police he had found a bomb, Barnes said.

Police examined the pipe, evacuated the station lobby and notified the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad. The bomb was later dismantled elsewhere, Barnes said.

The man’s brother was found waiting in a car outside the police station, he said. Both men were arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive device.

No one was injured in the incident, but about six people had to be evacuated, and pedestrian traffic outside the station was rerouted for about two hours, Barnes said.

The incident is under investigation.
