The Milanese can rest easy, for a strike that could have silenced the summer opera season at La Scala was averted Sunday. Negotiators reached agreement on a pay increase for the orchestra, thus salvaging Monday night’s opening of Verdi’s “Nabucco,” conducted by La Scala’s music director, Riccardo Muti. Orchestra members had said they would strike if their new contract did not give them better wages, but they agreed to accept a provisional pay increase and pursue regular contract negotiations in mid-July.
