Military authorities are investigating a group of Camp Pendleton Marines suspected of engaging in homosexual sex acts for X-rated films and photographs made in Oceanside.

The inquiry resulted from a police raid at a plush beachfront condominium June 15 that uncovered photographs and videotapes of several Marines engaged in sex acts.

An Oceanside man suspected of producing the tapes and photographs, 48-year-old Thomas McGrath Jr., was arrested the next day and booked on suspicion of violating state pandering and pimping laws.

Maj. Tom Mitchell, a Camp Pendleton spokesman, said the investigation began “several weeks ago,” but would not provide details because the inquiry has not been completed. None of the Marines has been arrested, he said.

The probe is being conducted in conjunction with the Naval Investigative Service and the Oceanside Police Department, Mitchell said.

Under Department of Defense regulations, homosexuality is deemed to be incompatible with service in the armed forces, he said. Military personnel found to be homosexual are typically given an administrative discharge, although in some cases a court-martial can result, Mitchell said.
