Long Beach : Park to Replace Ball Field

Share

The Long Beach City Council has approved the construction of a park at the Carmelitos housing project over residents’ objections to the loss of a baseball field.

City Manager James C. Hankla said the ball field presents a liability problem for the city. Errant baseballs can slam into fragile tile roofs or shatter windows, he said. The park is needed by senior citizens who live nearby.

But Carmelitos resident Glenn W. Crout, a recent unsuccessful City Council candidate, said the baseball field has existed many years without causing any trouble. Dorothy McAleavey, who said she represents many Carmelitos residents, said that youths at the housing project need a ball park for recreation.
