European Cup runner-up Benfica of Lisbon and defending Ecuadoran champion Barcelona of Guayaquil will highlight the four-team Marlboro Soccer Cup of New York at Giants Stadium in late August, the tournament’s sponsor announced.

The event will be the fourth and last in a series of four-team tournaments this year that included matches at Miami and San Antonio, Texas, and also will feature a tournament at Los Angeles in early August.

Benfica will meet Sporting Cristal of Peru on Aug. 19 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., with Barcelona facing Nacional of Medellin, the current leader of the Colombian league, in the second game of a doubleheader.

On Aug. 21, the losers of the opening matches will play for third place, with the winners meeting in the championship game.

Benfica lost the European Cup championship to PSV Eidhoven on penalty kicks, 6-5, on May 25 after playing to a scoreless tie. Nacional won the Marlboro Cup of Miami on March 6, beating the United States National team 3-2.

Sporting Cristal, the 10-time champion of Peru, is a major talent contributor to Peru’s national team and shares honors with Alianza Lima as the country’s premier club.
