Jeff Champ hit a run-scoring single at 3:27 a.m., EDT, Saturday to give the Bluefield Orioles a 3-2 victory over the Burlington Indians in the 27th inning of an Appalachian League game at Raleigh, N.C.
The game lasted 8 hours 16 minutes, just nine minutes short of the record for the longest professional baseball game. The longest game ever played was the International League marathon between Pawtucket and Rochester in 1981 that went 33 innings over two days.
