Still No Big Tie-Up on Ventura Freeway

Share

Motorists continued to use alternative routes this weekend to avoid construction and lane closures on the Ventura Freeway, helping to avert massive traffic jams previously predicted by the state Department of Transportation, an official said Sunday.

“The queue was never more than a quarter-mile deep where the lanes were taken down,” said George-Ann Rosenberg, a consultant hired by Caltrans to publicize the project. “

Three of four westbound lanes between Reseda Boulevard and Canoga Avenue were closed from midnight Saturday until 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

It was the second consecutive weekend the lane closures, which reduce maximum traffic capacity by two-thirds, failed to result in anything resembling a 10-mile backup that authorities said was possible.

The lane closures are part of a 16-month, $18.3-million freeway widening project. The closures are scheduled from midnight Fridays until 11 a.m. Saturdays and from midnight Saturdays to 11 a.m. Sundays until August, except for the Fourth of July weekend.
