Gang members in a convoy of three Cadillacs slowly drove by a Los Angeles dance club and opened fire on three rivals, killing one of them, police said Tuesday.
Issac Ellis, 20, was killed at 11:40 p.m. Monday as he was walking away from the Casa Camino Real dance club at 1828 S. Oak St., where patrons had expected the rap group Run-DMC to appear after an evening concert, Detective John Bunch said.
The club’s security guards had refused to let Ellis inside the club because he was a gang member, Bunch said.
As Ellis and two friends walked down a sidewalk, rival gang members in the three cars flashed hand signs and yelled gang slogans, Bunch said. Shots were fired from the Cadillacs when Ellis and his companions responded with their own hand signals and slogans.
The club was hosting a private party in honor of the rap trio Run-DMC, which had just finished a concert at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park. Members of the group said in a radio interview that they had no plans to attend the party, which was arranged by a promoter.
Police reported no major problems at the concert.
