A 14-year-old girl died after being shot in the head early Wednesday in the East San Diego apartment where she lived with her aunt and five other people, including a man being sought as a suspect, a police spokesman said.

According to Sgt. Hank Olais, Selina Whit was watching television just before 2 a.m. in a bedroom of the apartment in the 4200 block of 46th Street. Residents of the apartment said they were in the living room when they heard at least one shot fired and that they subsequently found the victim on the floor of the bedroom, Olais said.

He said residents told police that Terrance Russell, 20, fled with a revolver before officers arrived.

Olais said the victim had moved to San Diego from Fontana within the past two months and was living with an aunt.

Whit was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 2 a.m.

Police said a motive for the shooting remained unclear. They were asking for assistance in locating Russell, who also uses the names Steve Jackson, Steve Johnson and Steve Bowman.

He is described as black, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with a mustache and medium-length hair.
