A suspected robber whom police chased through several backyards was shot in the stomach Friday when he charged officers, police reported.

The suspect, Jeffrey Duane Silvey, 23, of Huntington Beach, was reported in stable condition Friday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.

Santa Ana Police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said the incident began about 12:30 a.m. Friday when officers spotted a car that had been reported stolen at knifepoint. They pulled the car over, but when they got out of their patrol car, the suspect backed his car towards them, forcing them to jump aside. The driver then sped off, Thomas said, and struck a street divider, disabling the car.

The suspect fled on foot but was finally found on Newhope Avenue in Fountain Valley. When he leaped to his feet and charged the officers, one fired a shot, hitting him in the stomach, Thomas said.

Silvey was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Orange County district attorney’s investigators are reviewing the case, which is routine in an officer-involved shooting, Thomas said.
