Settlement Indicated in Marc Buoniconti Case
The Citadel and school trainer Andy Clawson were dismissed as defendants in Marc Buoniconti’s $16.5-million negligence lawsuit Friday, but the case continued against Dr. E. K. Wallace Jr., the school’s football team doctor.
Although it appeared that a settlement may have been reached involving the military college, Clawson and Buoniconti, attorneys for the parties remained under a gag order issued by Judge John Hamilton Smith.
Before the three-week trial resumed Friday morning, there was a 40-minute meeting in Smith’s chambers attended by attorneys for the parties as well as Buoniconti, and his father, former Miami Dolphins star Nick Buoniconti.
The suit alleges negligence in the treating of a neck injury Buoniconti suffered several weeks before he played in an Oct. 26, 1985 game at East Tennessee State. Buoniconti, a middle linebacker for the Bulldogs, suffered a broken neck making a tackle in that game and was left a quadriplegic.
