A Brazilian woman visiting Glendale was killed Sunday when she was thrown from a motorcycle whose driver lost control of the vehicle, then fled.

The driver, Jose Jadao, 29, also a Brazilian national who has been visiting Glendale since January, allegedly fled to a friend’s house after the accident, leaving Marcia Almeida, 25, behind.

Police said Almeida suffered massive head injuries in the accident at Verdugo Road and Carlton Drive. She was taken to Glendale Adventist Medical Center, where she died three hours later.

Jadao was arrested about 30 minutes after the accident for felony hit-and-run, police said. He is being held in Glendale City Jail on $10,000 bail.

Witnesses told police that Jadao was driving north on Verdugo Road and lost control of the motorcycle as he slowed for a vehicle preparing to turn left onto Carlton Drive.

Jadao and Almeida were thrown from the motorcycle, police said. Witnesses told officers that Jadao, who suffered only scrapes on his arms and legs, appeared to check on Almeida’s condition before leaving her, police said.
