Danny Jackson scattered 7 hits over 6 innings Thursday night and earned his fourth victory of the season over Philadelphia as the Cincinnati Reds beat the slumping Phillies, 5-2, at Cincinnati.

Jackson (10-4) has allowed only 14 hits and 5 earned runs over 33 innings in his 4 wins over the Phillies.

In three previous starts, the left-hander pitched complete games. But the 95-degree heat prevented him from doing so again.

“It was hot out there,” Jackson said. “After running the bases in that one inning (the third), I got a little bit tired.

“I was just happy to go as long as I could go. I’d liked to have finished the game, but sometimes you fall short and let the bullpen take over.”

Rob Dibble pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, and John Franco went the final 1 for his 12th save as Philadelphia lost for the fifth straight time.

Phillies Juan Samuel and Lance Parrish sat out the game with injuries, and Bob Dernier pulled a hamstring while chasing a fly ball in the third. The center fielder is expected to be out for a few days.

“We’re a little patched-up now and just can’t put anything together,” Phillie Manager Lee Elia said. “We’ve got guys playing out of position, guys hitting in different roles in the lineup.

“When Dernier got hurt, it’s like you looked at each other and said, ‘What’s next?’ ”

Chris Sabo singled home a pair of runs in the third inning off Kevin Gross (8-5) to key a four-run rally.

Pittsburgh 2, San Diego 0--John Smiley combined with Jeff Robinson and Jim Gott on an eight-hitter as the Pirates shut out the Padres at San Diego.

Smiley (9-4) struck out a career-high 9 and allowed 5 hits in 6 innings to win his sixth straight.

The Pirates broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth off Andy Hawkins (8-7). Andy Van Slyke singled home the first run with a single and scored when Mike LaValliere walked with the bases loaded.

Robinson replaced Smiley with runners at first and second and one out in the seventh. Robinson picked off Chris Brown and retired pinch-hitter Benito Santiago on a fly ball. Gott pitched the ninth to earn his 10th save.
