University of Utah football players Charles Patterson, a Lincoln High School graduate, and Martel Black, a former Sweetwater running back, were among five people arrested by federal agents and campus police in Salt Lake City Wednesday in a raid that netted 2.2 pounds of cocaine, agents said.
Steve Lough, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Salt Lake City office, said the five were arrested during a raid on an apartment rented by Black.
Black, 19, and the four others were arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession with intent to distribute, Lough said. Officers were seeking a sixth suspect.
The other suspects in custody were identified as Utah student Samuel Simmons of Los Angeles, and non-students James McClendon of Los Angeles and Deandre Townsend of Panorama City.
Patterson, a freshman defensive back last season, played on Lincoln’s 1986 San Diego Section 2-A football championship team. Black, who led Utah with 520 rushing yards as a sophomore in 1987, played on the Sweetwater team that won the 3-A title in 1984.
They had been under investigation for three months after campus officers received reports of “cocaine being sold in the dorms and to students,” said Chief Wayne Shepherd of the University Police Department.
During the raid, Shepherd said, officers also seized “a little bit of stolen property, a shotgun and two semiautomatic handguns.”
Cocaine purchased in the undercover operation “has tested as high as 86% pure,” Shepherd said.
Lough said the DEA and university plan to arraign the suspects today before a U.S. magistrate and present the evidence to a Utah federal grand jury.
