A street-paving crew accidentally punctured a gas company main beneath a North Hollywood residential street this morning, releasing a hissing geyser of gas that caused the evacuation of 23 homes and an elementary school, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
The gas escaped in a visible cloud for an hour and a half after the break on Vineland Avenue near Hatteras Street, Sgt. Roger Deranian said. A Southern California Gas Co. crew shut down the main just before noon. Police evacuated residents of the block on Vineland where the break occurred, and about 700 children from Oxnard Street Elementary School. There were no injuries.
