VIVALDI: “ORLANDO FURIOSO.” Victoria de los Angeles, Lucia Valentini-Terrani, Marilyn Horne, Lajos Kozma, Sesto Bruscantini; Amici della Polifonia; I Solisti Veneti conducted by Claudio Scimone. Erato ECD-88190 (three compact discs). This decade-old recording’s reappearance in the sonically refurbished compact-disc format scores over Scimone’s later operatic forays in the security and character of the conducting (Scimone prefers a relatively large modern orchestra playing at contemporary pitches) and the revelatory singing by Horne, then at her virtuosic apogee as the love-crazed hero of Vivaldi’s Tasso-derived 1727 work. De Los Angeles supplies in sweetness of phrasing what she lacked in technical ease, and Valentini-Terrani as the seductress Alcina pours on the vocal honey. The men don’t bring similar confidence to their assignments.
