Al Unser Jr. passed pole-sitter Danny Sullivan on the 16th lap Sunday and maintained the lead the rest of the way to win the $700,000 Molson Indy CART race at Toronto.

Sullivan pressed Unser until Sullivan was penalized on his final pit stop, with 30 laps left, for crossing a line separating the pit exit from the raceway. Sullivan received a stop-and-go penalty, being forced to pit again and come to a complete stop.

“We were very, very equal,” Unser said. “It all depended on what part of the course we were on, who was quicker.”

Sullivan closed steadily, trimming a 16-second deficit after the penalty to under 10 seconds, but finished 12 seconds behind in his Penske-Chevrolet.

Unser’s March-Chevrolet completed the 103 laps of the 1.78 mile course at an average speed of 91.99 m.p.h. Michael Andretti placed third, Emerson Fittipaldi was fourth and Bobby Rahal finished fifth.

Sullivan took the series lead with 72 points to 66 for Unser. Rick Mears has 64 and Rahal is at 61.
