Irene Butler, a 23-year resident of the city, announced Monday that she will be a candidate in the November election of a new city clerk.

She is seeking to succeed four-term City Clerk Alicia Wentworth, who retired last month. Assistant City Clerk Connie Brockway, appointed as acting city clerk after Wentworth’s retirement, took out her candidacy papers Monday.

Butler is the assistant city clerk in neighboring Newport Beach, a job she said she has had for more than eight years. She also said she spent four years with a women’s auxiliary to the Navy and was a yeoman 2nd class at the Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Naval Receiving Station during the Korean War.

“I felt that, at sometime, I would like to be of service to my own community--and it’s a promotion,” Butler said Monday.
