Brett, Wilson Fight on Plane After Royals Lose

Share

Neither George Brett nor Willie Wilson were injured when they scuffled in the rear of the Kansas City Royals’ team plane Sunday. The confrontation consisted of shoving and was broken up by several coaches and players.

The scuffle began with the team’s chartered plane to Milwaukee sitting on the runway in Boston. The pilot informed the Royals that the plane would not take off until everyone was seated.

Brett, sitting near the front of the plane, heard Wilson and others complaining about a lack of seating on the plane. Noticing that Wilson was not seated, Brett went back and confronted him.

“We’ve been through too many wars to be mad at each other,” Wilson said after he and Brett met with Kansas City Manager John Wathan before Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

“We laughed about it. It’s not something he wanted on his agenda or I wanted on mine. If it took us 11 years to have one pushing incident, it’s not a big deal. Maybe it will take 11 more to have another one. It was just a big misunderstanding.”

Said Brett: “We were frustrated about losing. Some things were said and our tempers got away. It’s just one of those things. Everything is patched up.”

Wathan said: “I guess it could be a positive sign. It shows the aggressiveness of our team.”
