ELECTED OFFICIALS’ PENSIONS

Share
Compiled by Researcher Cecilia Rasmussen

Elected office rarely is a way to build up a large pension. Former Mayor Sam Yorty, for instance, receives a pension of $14,481 a year for his service as mayor from 1961 to 1973. As is the case with some other public officials, however, Yorty receives additional retirement pay--$7,344--for another form of government service, in the Legislature.

Were Mayor Tom Bradley to retire in 1989, or lose a bid for reelection, he would receive $55,032 a year for his service as a city councilman from 1963 to 1973 and as mayor from 1973 to 1989. That would be in addition to the pension of $12,189 he already receives for work on the Los Angeles Police Department from 1940 to 1961.

Listed below are the pensions paid to former city and county elected officials, excluding judges; other government pensions are also listed. Some elected Los Angeles County officials who would otherwise be receiving pensions chose instead to withdraw their pension fund money at the time of retirement. The length of service required to be eligible for a pension, and the age at which it is paid, vary according to the type of service. The City Employees Retirement System, for instance, requires 10 years of service and pays the pension at age 55. An official covered by the Los Angeles County Retirement System similarly is eligible after 10 years of service, but can receive a pension at age 50. Under a cost of living provision, many of the pension checks will increase 3% to 5% on Aug. 1 .
