The World Boxing Council approved a possible fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Canada’s Don Lalonde for the new super-middleweight crown.
In a statement released by the WBC, Leonard and Lalonde asked to be considered as candidates to fight for the vacant title.
Leonard, whose record is 34-1, would be trying for a fourth world crown after renouncing his middleweight title in June, 1987.
Lalonde (31-2) holds the light-heavyweight crown. He has defended it once since gaining the title last November.
