Tennis Roundup : Rostagno Upsets No. 2-Seeded Gilbert, 6-4, 6-3

Derrick Rostagno upset second-seeded Brad Gilbert, 6-4, 6-3, Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the $232,050 D.C. hard-court tennis tournament at Washington.

Rostagno broke Gilbert’s serve to take the first set, and with the second set at 3-3, he won the last three games to close out the match.

“I didn’t serve as well as I would have liked to,” said Gilbert, ranked No. 9 in the world. “He was capitalizing on my second serve.”

In other matches, 16-year-old Michael Chang scored 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 5-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India; third-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador downed Christian Saceanu of West Germany, 6-3, 7-6; No. 4-seeded Aaron Krickstein beat Jaime Yzaga, 6-2, 6-4; seventh-seeded Darren Cahill of Australia routed Chris Pridham of Canada, 6-2, 6-1; Barry Moir of South Africa defeated countryman Danie Visser, 6-3, 6-2, and Jay Berger overcame Christo Van Resnburg, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Chang, the tournament’s youngest player, overcame an 0-2 deficit in the first set, then won the final four games of the second set to beat Krishnan, ranked No. 33.

“Today I put more pace on my groundstrokes,” Chang said. “I was moving him around more, mixing it up to keep him honest.”

Ida Budarova of Czechoslovakia upset third-seeded Raffaela Reggi of Italy, 6-4, 6-3, and advanced to the quarterfinals in the $100,000 Golden Racket tournament at Aix-En-Provence, France.

In other matches, top-seeded Sylvia Hanika of West Germany defeated Denise Krajcovicoa of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 7-5; second-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy downed Wiltrud Probst of West Germany, 6-1, 7-6, and Niege Dias of Brazil beat Sybille Niox-Chateau of France, 6-2, 6-4.
