The San Diego Nomads will play the San Jose Earthquakes tonight at 7:30 at Southwestern College in the first round of the Western Soccer Alliance playoffs.
The Nomads, defending WSA champions, appeared on their way to the regular-season league championship. But the Seattle Storm, which had finished second in the WSA’s first three seasons, won back-to-back road matches to go from 10 points behind the Nomads to seven points ahead and win the regular-season title.
The second-place Nomads (9-3, 76 points) and the third-place Earthquakes (7-5, 61 points) have split the regular-season matches, with each team winning at home. San Jose won, 2-1, on penalty kicks June 5 and the Nomads won, 2-1, in overtime July 8. This is a rematch of last season’s championship match, which the Nomads won 3-1.
The winner will play at Seattle (10-2, 83 points) July 30 for the WSA title.
