Local News in Brief : Hayden ‘Stomps Out’

Share

Santa Monica Assemblyman Tom Hayden, an anti-war activist in 1960s, “stomped out” of a radio talk show in Seattle on Monday when another guest, who had served two tours of duty in Vietnam, refused to shake his hand.

Dave Ross, host of the “Mid-Day Program” on KIRO-AM, said it was the first time he ever had a guest walk out during a live broadcast.

A producer said the topic for the show, “Vietnam: What Do We Tell Our Kids?” was cleared with Hayden’s publicist.

Hayden called the incident “a minor flap” and accused the station of misleading him because he thought he was invited to talk about his autobiography.

“It could have gone either way, but I figured if he was going to withdraw his hand I would withdraw my voice,” said Hayden, an assemblyman since 1982.
