New York 3, Milwaukee 2--Don Mattingly hit a two-run home run and drove in all three runs as the Yankees beat the Brewers at New York to take sole possession of first place for the first time since June 19.

The Brewers took a 2-1 lead in the second on Joey Meyer’s two-run home run, one of only three hits allowed by John Candelaria (11-6). But New York rallied to take the lead in the seventh when Luis Aguayo hit a single and Mattingly, batting against Teddy Higuera (7-6), then hit his 10th home run.

Minnesota 5, Toronto 4--Kirby Puckett’s fourth hit of the game, a two-out double in the ninth inning, drove in two runs as the Twins rallied to beat the Blue Jays at Minneapolis.

Al Newman hit a single with one out in the ninth against reliever Tom Henke (1-3), who entered the game with 17 saves in 18 opportunities. John Moses ran for Newman and took second one out later when Randy Bush walked. Puckett then hit an 0-and-2 pitch off the wall in right-center field.

Puckett also had three singles to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and give him 143 hits this year, the most in the majors.
