Dates Set for First L.A. Jazz Festival

Set to coincide with the city’s 217th birthday, the inaugural City of Los Angeles Jazz Festival will be presented Sept. 3-4.

Sponsored by the Los Angeles-based International Assn. of Jazz Appreciation, the event will include a free public concert Sept. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at MacArthur Park, with Poncho Sanchez, the Harold Land Quintet and the Central Avenue Band.

On Sept. 4 at the Shrine Auditorium, the festival will offer the Nat Adderley Quintet, the James Moody Quartet with Slide Hampton, the Oliver Jones Trio from Canada, and the L.A. Jazz ’88 Big Band led by Buddy Collette (with Joe Henderson, Harold Land, Bill Green, Vi Redd, Bill Henderson, Clora Bryant, Buster Cooper, Cecil Bridgewater, Oscar Brashear, Bobby Bryant, Garnett Brown, George Bohanon and others).
