The attorney for Dwane Casey, the University of Kentucky’s assistant basketball coach, said the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. has no solid evidence that Casey put $1,000 in a package allegedly sent to the father of Fairfax High School’s Chris Mills, whom the Wildcats signed to a letter of intent.

Joe Bill Campbell said he anticipated the case being based solely on circumstantial evidence. Campbell made his comments a day after the NCAA had informed the university that there are “reasonable” grounds to conclude that Casey sent the money to Claud Mills in March.

In another incident, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that in 1984, when Casey was an assistant at Western Kentucky, the university was reprimanded by the NCAA for a recruiting violation involving Casey and Coach Clem Haskins. The violation involved the two coaches’ entertaining the cousin of prospective player Tellis Frank with meals and lodging.
