Said Aouita of Morocco, the world and Olympic 5,000-meter champion, beat Briton Peter Elliot in the 800 meters at the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s Grand Prix track and field meet in Verona, Italy.
Aouita clocked the eighth-best time of the year, 1 minute 44.64 seconds. Elliot finished in 1:44.75, followed by Senegal’s Moussa Fall in 1:45.03.
Americans Kevin Henderson and David Patrick finished 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles. Henderson’s time was 51.01 seconds, Patrick’s 51.43.
Olympic gold medalist Evelyn Ashford won the women’s 100 meters in 11.49 seconds, well behind her U.S. trials time of 10.81 seconds. Many of the competitors were slowed by heat and 83% humidity.
