United Artists Communications said it signed a definitive agreement to buy the 400-screen Commonwealth Theater chain for $72.5 million. Last February the Denver-based firm said it would buy a half-interest in Commonwealth from its new owners, Renta Corp., a Spanish affiliate of Los Angeles-based Cannon Films. With the acquisition, United Artists Communications will have more than 2,700 screens. It also owns and operates 23 cable television systems serving about 815,000 subscribers.
