Sylmar Heads Home After Second Loss

Sylmar had four players thrown out on the basepaths in a 5-1 loss to Campbell-Moreland in the state Palamino tournament Friday at P.A.L. Stadium in San Jose. It was Sylmar’s second loss, eliminating the team from tournament play.

“We were all up late Friday night,” Coach Chuck Hatfield said. “And it looked like we never woke up.”

Things started well enough. Sylmar scored a run in the bottom of the first on a single by Sal Batrez to take a 1-0 lead. However, a baserunner was thrown out at the plate to end the inning after hesitating at third on a ground ball.

Sylmar left-hander Colin Hines allowed four hits and four runs--two earned--in four innings. With Sylmar trailing, 2-1, in the third, Kraig Constandino put Campbell ahead to stay with two-run home run.

Third baseman Rich Aude was 2 for 2 for Sylmar (8-3), which managed only seven singles.

“We played terrible,” Hatfield said. “We never got anything going all day.”

Sylmar had four players declared ineligible for the tournament hours before the team’s first game Wednesday.
