Local Runners Win National Titles

Norberto Avila and Graeme Shirley of San Diego won age-group titles at the TAC/USA National Masters Track & Field Championships at Showalter Field in Orlando, Fla., Saturday.

Avila, 30, won the men’s 30-34 5,000 meters in 15:29, and Shirley, 42, took the men’s 1,500 meters in the 40-44 age group in 4:03.93.

Jim O’Neil of La Jolla won the men’s 60-and-over 10,000-meter title on Friday.

BASKETBALL

Reggie Jordan scored 32 points and Shaun Manning added 26 as Nice Advice clinched the regular-season title of the Supreme Court Pro-Am Basketball League with a 92-85 victory over Courageous Endurance at the University of San Diego.

Nice Advice will be seeded No. 1 in the playoffs.

The Crown, the defending Supreme Court champion, clinched second with a 94-92 overtime victory over The Truth on a shot by Nate Barnett, who led all scorers with 27 points.

Justice For All won the women’s regular-season title with an 85-61 victory over Blind Faith. Elaine Nelson scored 26 points to lead Justice For All, and Christine Willis, who will be a senior at Mission Bay High School, led all scorers with 28 points for Blind Faith.

Regular-season play ends with three games today, beginning at noon at USD. Admission is free. The playoffs begin Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson YMCA in San Diego.

HORSE RACING

A collection of 36 photographs will be featured in “Thoroughbreds: The Kentucky Derby Museum Photo Contest Winners,” an exhibit on display Wednesday through Sept. 14 at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Photos depict thoroughbred racing, trotters, horse breeding and training and were winning entries in the 1987 Kentucky Derby Museum Photo Contest. The Hall of Champions is located in the Casa de Balboa building in Balboa Park.
