Local News in Brief : 3 Die in Gang Shootings
At least three people were killed and four wounded in Los Angeles street gang shootings despite three nights of police sweeps and nearly 800 arrests, officials said Monday.
Two other shootings, possibly involving gang members, left one man dead in Hollywood and two wounded in suburban Baldwin Park, police said.
During a three-night sweep by a 250-member anti-gang task force in South-Central Los Angeles, at least 760 people were arrested and 25 guns seized, police said.
A separate undercover task force that targets gang members who engage in drug trafficking arrested 33 people and seized nearly 5 pounds of cocaine and $76,000 in cash, Cmdr. William Booth said.
Two of the gang-related shooting deaths over the weekend in Compton and South-Central Los Angeles were believed to have involved members of the Crips gang, police said. The third fatality stemmed from a shoot-out at a gas station between two gangs, but investigators declined to say which gangs were involved.
Several members of the Crips attended church-sponsored “peace talks” with the rival Bloods more than a week ago in an effort designed to halt the gang wars.
