A rubbish truck rear-ended a RTD bus on the Santa Ana Freeway in East Los Angeles on Tuesday, sending 11 people to nearby hospitals with minor injuries and snarling traffic during the afternoon rush-hour, officials said.
The bus was heading south at 4:20 p.m. when it was struck, the California Highway Patrol said.
Gregg Davy, spokesman for the Southern California Rapid Transit District, said the truck driver told investigators that his brakes failed. The injured claimed neck and back injuries, Davy said. Bus driver Dee Zeller was not hurt.
The accident closed off the southbound lanes for more than an hour, causing huge traffic tie-ups at the scene near the Long Beach Freeway interchange, the CHP said.
