‘Proposition 13 Benefits Few at Expense of Many’

Share

Within the last few weeks, you featured an editorial regarding Proposition 13. I am one of those people victimized by this most archaic law.

My property taxes are 10 times as high as my next-door neighbor, who purchased her house 16 years ago. Because of Howard Jarvis’ brilliant maneuver, I am now locked into paying not only my own property taxes but those of my stay-put neighbors.

Of course, I could not have purchased a house before 1978 because I was in college. My other alternative was to be forever locked into being a renter. Proposition 13 is the most unjust, the most discriminatory law in existence. This injustice has been in existence for 10 years now. This law should be thrown out and amends should be made to people who have been forced to carry their neighbors on their own tax rolls during the last decade.

I move that we file a class-action suit against the state for letting this law stay on the books. Everyone should pay their fair share of property taxes and not a few victims. Ten years is enough for highway robbery!
