NFL Exhibition Roundup : Schroeder, Oliphant Overcome Dolphins

Jay Schroeder connected with rookie Mike Oliphant on touchdown passes of 23 and 60 yards in the fourth quarter to lift the Washington Redskins to a 27-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins in a National Football League exhibition game Saturday night at Miami.

The Redskins’ Doug Williams hit Art Monk on a 53-yard touchdown play in the first half.

Rookie tight end Ferrell Edmunds scored Miami’s only touchdown on a 71-yard play when he caught a quick pass over the middle from Ron Jaworski and outran three defensive backs to the end zone. Dan Marino did not play for Miami.

Oliphant, a speedy receiver from the University of Puget Sound, was a third-round draft choice of the Redskins.

Denver 34, San Francisco 24--John Elway threw a pair of touchdown passes, and backup Gary Kubiak hit Sam Graddy on a 3-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter to clinch the win for the Broncos at Denver.

After a wild second quarter that saw both teams score 21 points, the Broncos held a 24-21 lead at intermission. Steve Young threw a pair of touchdown passes for the 49ers, who played without Joe Montana.

Denver wide receiver Ricky Nattiel dashed 75 yards on an end-around play for a Denver touchdown.

Cleveland 23, Tampa Bay 3--Bernie Kosar threw first-half touchdown passes to Webster Slaughter and Earnest Byner, and Cleveland’s defense sacked Tampa Bay quarterbacks five times at Tampa, Fla.

Kosar completed 10 of his first 11 passes and wound up completing 14 of 24 for 192 yards. He threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Slaughter on Cleveland’s first possession and a 13-yarder to Byner on the next.

Tampa Bay quarterback Vinny Testaverde, a teammate of Kosar’s at the University of Miami, completed 7 of 15 passes for 88 yards. He was sacked four times, threw one interception and had a 9-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty.

Kansas City 27, Atlanta 13--Paul Palmer raced 61 yards for one touchdown, and Steve DeBerg passed 24 yards to rookie J. R. Ambrose for another to lead the Chiefs at Atlanta.

DeBerg hit Ambrose, a rookie from Mississippi, with 54 seconds left in the half. Palmer’s long touchdown came on the Chiefs’ first play of the third quarter for a 21-3 lead.

Cincinnati 24, Buffalo 13--Boomer Esiason passed 4 yards to tight end Rodney Holman for a touchdown, and Stanley Wilson ran 1 yard for another as Cincinnati scored on its first two possessions at Orchard Park, N.Y.

N.Y. Giants 24, N.Y. Jets 21--Phil McConkey caught 4 passes for 89 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown grab that proved to be the game-winner for the Giants at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Giants broke a 7-7 tie on Brandy Brownlee’s 31-yard field goal at 9:31 of the third period after the Jets’ Michael Harper fumbled away a punt. Phil Simms hit Veno Belk with an 11-yard touchdown pass after a 25-yard punt gave the Giants the ball on the Jets’ 39.

Houston 27, New England 14--Allen Pinkett scored on runs of 18 and 2 yards, and Tony Zendejas kicked field goals of 27 and 35 yards for the Oilers at Memphis, Tenn.

Pinkett’s second score culminated a drive that included a 48-yard sprint by running back Lorenzo White, who finished with 115 yards.

John Stephens, who had a 29-yard run for New England in the second quarter, led the Patriots in rushing with 53 yards on 9 carries.

Drew Hill scored the opening touchdown of the game on a 13-yard pass from Warren Moon.

New England got its first touchdown when Raymond Clayborn picked off a pass by Brent Pease and returned it 77 yards.

Indianapolis 25, Green Bay 21--Dean Biasucci kicked six field goals, and rookie quarterback Chris Chandler hit 14 of 23 passes for 157 yards in the second half for the Colts at Indianapolis.

The Colts took the lead for good at 16-14 on a 52-yard field goal by Biasucci in the third period, matching his personal career best.

Green Bay’s Brent Fullwood scored on a 28-yard run.
