An immigrant from Panama died early Monday, several hours after he was shot in South-Central Los Angeles by a gang member who falsely accused him of being a member of a rival gang, police said.

Ronaldo Lindo, 29, of Lynwood was making a call from a pay telephone at a gas station near San Pedro Street and Manchester Avenue about 10:40 p.m. Sunday, when he was approached by a gunman and shot repeatedly, Detective Paul Mize said.

Lindo died at 2:38 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.

“Apparently the victim was mistaken to be a gang member,” Mize said. “It was senseless. He definitely was not a gang member.”

Officers who were passing by the gas station saw Aaron Cornett, 21, running across the street carrying a gun, Mize said.

After a short chase, police arrested Cornett along with Bobby Joe Daniels, 27, the driver of the getaway car, and a 15-year-old female passenger, all on suspicion of murder, Mize said.

In another shooting incident Sunday night, five reputed gang members were shot by rival gang members in a Compton gas station parking lot, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said. Two of the victims were treated at the scene, and the other three remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday. There were no arrests.
