Higgins Captures 45-and-Over Title at Veterans Event

Billy Higgins of Yorba Linda defeated Herm Ahlers of Dana Point, 7-6, 6-4, to win the men’s 45-and-over tennis singles title of the California Veterans Tournament Saturday at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Dennis Torunt of Corona del Mar and Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove defeated Marty Erck of Santa Monica and John Lowman of Los Angles, 6-4, 6-2, to win the men’s 35-and-over doubles championship.

In men’s 55-and-over doubles, Lenny Lindborg of Laguna Beach and Bob Duesler of Newport Beach defeated Ron Berry of Los Angeles and Colin Thompson of Australia, 7-5, 6-1.

Bob Doner and Dick Fitzsimmons, both of Newport Beach, defeated Ed Saunders of Los Angeles and Walt Bauker of West Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-3, for the men’s 60-and-over title.

Judy Louie of Corona del Mar and Maria Pinterova of Hungary defeated Kerstin Seelbach of West Germany and Susie Swartman of Hawaii, 6-1, 6-1, for the women’s 40-and-over doubles title.
